2009-2010

Field 3 Photos from the 2009-2010 Growing Season

2009 Crop was Spring Wheat
No pre-emergence herbicide was applied prior to planting.  Glenn spring wheat was planted with a JD 1590 no-till drill at  1.25 million pure live seeds/acre 1.5" deep on April 23, 2009 with  56 pounds per acre of 7-30-25 fertilizer with the seed and  108 lbs./ac. urea (46-0-0).  13 ounces/acre Huskie, 2 ounces/acre Propomax, 1 lb./ac. Ammonium Sulfate and 1 quart/100gallons Liberate was applied on June 5, 2009 for post emergent weed control.  Spring wheat was harvested on August 14, 2009 and yielded;  40.9 bushels/acre @ 15% protein, 64.5 pounds/bushel with .8% dockage.

A pre-emergence herbicide application of Mad Dog (glyphosate isopropylamine)
with AMS (Ammonium sulfamate) and Flame was sprayed on September 10 and again on September 23, 2009.  Darrell winter wheat was planted with a JD 1590 no-till drill on September 25, 2009 at; 1.25 million pure live seeds/acre + .5 lbs/ac. turnip seed at 1.5" deep with 50# MicroEssentials (12-40-0-10) fertilizer.

Field 3 Photos from the 2008 Growing Season

2008 Crop was Peas
No pre-emergence herbicide was applied prior to planting.  Journey pea was planted with a JD 1590 no-till drill at 144 lbs./ac. 3" deep on April 14, 2008 with 50 pounds per acre of 11-52-0 fertilizer and Nitrastik-c inoculant with the seed and  no additional fertilizer.  25 ounces/acre Result (co-pack) was applied on June 7, 2008 for post emergent weed control.  The pea crop was harvested as hay on July 14, 2008 and yielded 1234 lbs/acre.

A cover crop of .4 lb/ac sunflower, 4.5 lb/ac soybean, 6 lb/ac cowpea, 9.6 lb/ac buckwheat, .8 lb/ac turnip, .8 lb/ac radish and 4 lb/ac sudan was planted with a JD 1590 no-till drill on July 14, 2008 at 29 pounds/ acre at 1" deep with no additional fertilizer.  The cover crop failed to establish in the low residue cover during dry conditions.  A pre-emergence herbicide application of RoundUp (glyphosate)
with AMS (Ammonium sulfamate) and Flame was sprayed on September 10, 2008.  Another cover crop of 9.4 lb/ac lentil and 3.5 lb/ac turnip and radish mixed was planted on September 11, 2008.  As can be seen in the October 30th photo, the low residue situation after harvesting the pea crop for hay and the failed cover crop left the soil almost bare.  This field experienced some wind and water erosion as a result.  Good residue cover to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool is necessary to facilitate the establishment of a cover crop.
