Demonstration Site

The Soil Health Demonstration site is located on the NE 1/4 of Section 24 T143N R96W Dunn County, North Dakota of the Dickinson Research and Extension Center near Manning, ND.  The site is bordered on the east by ND State Highway 22, and is approximately 2 miles south of Manning, or 11 miles south of Killdeer, or 22 miles north of Dickinson, ND.  The site is divided into eight fields with between 13 and 19 acres of cropland.  Part of fields 3 and 6 are in permanent grass.

Planned Cover Crop Mixtures

Field 1: Sunflower (.4#/ac.), Forage Radish (.8#/ac.), Turnip (.8#/ac.), Cowpea (6#/ac.), Buckwheat (4.8#/ac.), Sweet Clover (.3#/ac.), Red Clover (.5#/ac.), Soybean (4.5#/ac.), Sudan grass (3.5#/ac.) and Millet (2#/ac.).

Field 3: Sunflower (.4#/ac.), Soybean (4.5#/ac.), Cowpea (6#/ac.), Buckwheat (9.6#/ac.), Turnip (.8#/ac.), Forage Radish (.8#/ac.) and Sudan grass (7#/ac.).

Field 4: Lentil (9#/ac.), Turnip (.8#/ac.), Canola (.5#/ac.), Pea (10#/ac.), Forage Radish (.8#/ac.), Oat (12#/ac.) and Millet (3#/ac.).

Field 5: Sunflower (.4#/ac.), Soybean (4.5#/ac.), Cowpea (6#/ac.), Buckwheat (9.6#/ac.), Turnip (.8#/ac.), Forage Radish (.8#/ac.) and Millet (4#/ac.).

Below is the extended crop rotation for the demonstration.
Some crops will be substituted for others during the first few years to get the rotation started.
